Leadership Development

The Leadership Quality of Emotional Intelligence.

“Let’s discuss a leadership quality to avoid a common mistake in leading other people that wastes time, kills employee engagement and productivity. That mistake is reacting emotionally to a circumstance as opposed to practicing emotional intelligence.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about emotional intelligence in leadership, so I thought it would be cool to share with you an ancient wisdom way of actually obtaining it.

According to the dictionary emotional intelligence is…

The Leadership Quality of Emotional Intelligence

When you’re under pressure to produce results, navigate all of your work relationships, all while putting out whatever fires break out…Having the leadership quality of practicing emotional intelligence can be a tall order. In today’s fast paced world of business it can be difficult to have this type of self control where you don’t let the pressure of your current circumstances become stress.

All of this makes it tough to have the leadership quality of being aware of, and then controlling your emotions to express them with good judgement and empathy.

Now, I’m not letting you off the hook here but you need to know,…“This is not your fault!”

Here’s why. In all my years of coaching I’ve found that the overwhelming majority of people were never taught how to do this. I sure wasn’t! Practicing emotional intelligence is something I had to learn in my ancient wisdom training. Then practice applying it within leadership.

Here’s the good news.

I’ve also discovered that you can change if you want to. I’ve seen senior leaders with decades of experience achieve sustainable behavioral change to make the practice of emotional intelligence much easier, and even natural.

Here’s how you can accomplish this.

You use an Ancient Wisdom process that’s referred to as “Stopping the World.” What stopping the world does is stop your emotional response and internal dialog (mental chatter) surrounding a situation. When you can accomplish this you get the control necessary to respond to a situation as opposed to reacting. You access the gap between external input and your reaction to that input.

This gives you the mental clarity to access every bit of your experience, along with your intuition, to handle whatever situation or crisis in the moment in which it’s happening.

Here’s how you’re going to do this…

First, you need to be mindful of how you’re feeling about whatever is taking place. If you’re getting stressed or frustrated then shift your focus from your head to inside your physical body. This will stop your mental chatter and ground you in the moment. Without mental chatter and the centeredness obtained with a focus in your body you’ll get control over your emotions.

If you’d like to get more details on this Ancient Wisdom Technique you can find it here!

Until next time…Lead with a Commanding Presence
